In the past, it was assumed that the first Datura Child's name had been lost in the smoke and mirrors of humankind's memory. What was disputed was whether this was by chance or by design. In modern times however, it is usually accepted that his name was never truly known. Most historians understand that he lived most of his life in complete silence, uttering his first words well into his twilight years, acutely aware of the mysterious powers hermetically sealed within words, gravely aware of the boundless horrors that could assail one who wielded such spells carelessly. Instead, he communicated in cryptic symbols and riddles woven into images that were repulsive and indecipherable to those whose eyes were not meant to behold them, yet magnetic and luminous to others haunted by the teeming nightmares of the womb, those who sought not the deceptive light of reason but the living darkness of the unchartered depths. Those for whom the shadow was greater than the substance. The creatures that wondered. The creatures who were called Datura Children.
